December 12, 2011: The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on a proposal of Andrew J. Sturgis of Belle Haven to license and locate four pound nets in the Chesapeake Bay as follows:
The first net is to be located approximately 0.3 miles Northwest of Powells Bluff and approximately 0.6 miles North of Daymarker #7 at the entrance to Occohannock Creek. Length of the net will be about 834 feet. The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 33 Minutes 29.0214 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 56 Minutes 37.9503 Seconds W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 33 Minutes 29.2129 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 56 Minutes 27.5953 Seconds W.
The second net is to be located approximately 1.1 miles North of Powells Bluff and approximately 0.7 miles Southwest of Bull Cove. Length of the net will be about 1,147 feet. The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 34 Minutes 23.3796 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 56 Minutes 27.0653 Seconds W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 34 Minutes 18.8529 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 56 Minutes 13.9930 Seconds W.
The third net is to be located near the mouth of Craddock Creek, approximately 0.5 miles North of Bull Cove and approximately 0.6 miles Southwest of Back Creek. Length of the net will be about 750 feet. The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 35 Minutes 18.0599 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 56 Minutes 07.6041 Seconds W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 35 Minutes 15.9845 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 55 Minutes 58.6470 Seconds W.
The fourth net is to be located near Sandy Point, approximately 0.6 miles North of Back Creek and approximately 2 miles South of the entrance to Nandua Creek. Length of the net will be about 1,115 feet. The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 36 Minutes 07.9577 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 55 Minutes 37.8141 Seconds W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 Degrees 36 Minutes 06.7888 Seconds N and Longitude 75 Degrees 55 Minutes 24.0315 Seconds W.
A public hearing on this proposal will be held at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia.
